Mount Dukono Eruption Nearly Strikes Dozens of Hikers

Norh Halmahera, Indonesia – Mount Dukono in North Halmahera erupted, sending plumes of volcanic ash soaring between 600 to 700 meters into the sky. The sudden eruption almost endangered the lives of dozens of hikers.

Videos circulating on social media show hikers enjoying the scenic views of Mount Dukono when suddenly, a roaring sound was followed by an eruption and a billow of volcanic ash. Fearing for their safety, the hikers quickly descended the mountain to take refuge at a safer distance. It is believed that these hikers were on the mountain on August 17, 2024, to celebrate Indonesia's 79th Independence Day.

Meanwhile, the local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) admitted that they were unaware of any hikers attempting to climb Mount Dukono. Officials had previously issued warnings to residents and tourists to avoid any activities within a 2 to 3-kilometer radius of the mountain’s peak. The ongoing eruptions continue to pose a serious threat, especially with the possibility of further volcanic activity.

“We urge the public to stay away from the danger zone. Volcanic ash can be hazardous to health, and there is also the risk of lava flows or more powerful eruptions,” said North Halmahera BPBD Chief Hentje Hetharian when contacted by reporters on Wednesday (20/08).

As a result, several hiking trails to Mount Dukono have been temporarily closed by authorities as a safety priority for residents and visitors.

According to data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Mount Dukono's energy levels remain high, and it is currently at alert level two. Residents and tourists are advised to refrain from any activities within a 2 to 3-kilometer radius of the peak.

Mount Dukono, located in North Halmahera, has been continuously erupting since the 1930s. The area is known for its frequent and often unpredictable volcanic activity, making it a popular but risky destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts.
